Medical assistant, dental assistant, and medical laboratory technician programs.
Contributed by "MA15Years", a medical assistant, who has been working in this field for fifteen years.
I do want to call attention to anyone who has been asked the following questions: "Why don't you go for your RN license?", or: "Why are you just an MA?". I never wanted to go for the LPN, or RN license, because I am happy with being a MA. I love the diversity of this job. My skills have grown over the years and there always were opportunities to do and learn more in the clinics and hospitals where I worked. I am ALWAYS quick to correct someone who has mistaken me for a nurse. This could be taken as a compliment, but whenever I am mistaken for a RN or LPN I politely respond: "I am not a nurse, I am a Medical Assistant".

Appearance can positively or negatively influence the opinion one has of the medical assistant. It is important to act professionally and appropriately around patients, doctors, healthcare professionals, and other support personnel. Both, professional appearance and attitude significantly enhance the overall reputation of the medical assistant and attests to their professional competency. A professional always strives to maintain a neat appearance in the workplace and maintain their professional status.
Expectations:
Medical assistants are expected to observe the values of the employer, adhere to all office standards, obey office rules, code of ethics, and embrace the philosophy and mission of the medical office team. The people seen in a medical office often are sick or have health concerns. This demands good communication and a caring and understanding attitude at all times to provide optimal patient care.
The professional medical assistant wears a clean, pressed uniform, and clean white shoes, a name tag, and does not wear heavy perfumes, keeps the hair nicely styled, and fingernails clean and trimmed.
Shoes should be sturdy, clean, and comfortable to stand and walk in. White nursing shoes work best, as well as white sneakers. Important is that the shoe has closed toes and a heel strap if open in the back.
Jewelry should be subtle and tasteful. Rings should be limited to just one engagement or wedding band for both appearance and safety. Wristbands and bracelets should not dangle loosely and get in the way of procedures.
A big part of professionalism is being punctual and well organized and prepared; also education, appearance, as well as having tolerance, respect, and compassion for others.
Empathy is the ability to "put yourself in someone else's shoes" and to identify with and understand another person's feelings. Patients who are ill, frustrated, or frightened appreciate empathetic medical assistants. They expect healthcare personnel to understand, be aware of and sensitive to their feelings and thoughts without having to explicitly articulating these feelings.
