The old days of solo practitioners stuck in a medical office armed with nothing but a black bag, a stethoscope, lamp and mirrors and an all-knowing good nurse Friday to assist them are defintely over. The changing structure of the American medical and healthcare system and the new dynamics of modern medical practices spur the ever increasing demands on medical office staff and modern health care teams. Today's medical assistants are predominantly found in mid- to large size medical group practices, wellness and health clinics, as well as medical centers, and hospitals.

red square bullet The Employer's Preferences
Those who hire medical assistants usually are general medical doctors, such as family physicians, or specialists such as internists, urologists, allergists, dermatologists, pulmonologiest, and pediatricians. Because they prefer skilled staff in their office, their focus immediately shifts to applicants who have experience, and even better yet, successfully passed their certification examination. Experience and certification gives them some assurance that the medical assistant they are about to welcome to their team meets their office standards and level of competence.

Medical assistants in the front office, which includes the reception area and waiting rooms, answer phones, schedule appointments, greet the patients, handle referrals, and make phone calls to relay approved messages from the doctor, such as the outcome of diagnostic tests and lab results, to patients.

Medical assistants working at the front desk have typical clerical and admin responsibilities, such as scheduling appointments, pulling patient records, completing charts, faxing documentation, and managing a petty cash drawer.

They also handle patient's co-payments on their way out, posting service charges and payments to accounts, calling the pharmacy to confirm prescription refills, overseeing paperwork, making sure lab test results are mailed to patients, arranging for hospital admission, reminding patients of their follow-up appointments and taking care of other billing and bookkeeping tasks.
Medical assistants in the back office are often referred to as the clinical medical assistant. Their duties include calling the patients in from the waiting area, taking their vital signs, height and weight measurements, showing them to the treatment areas, initiating the medical history form, collecting information, such as a list of medications, administering treatments, medications, and injections as ordered by the physician, and making sure that there are plenty of supplies.

They collect specimens, and make sure that any ordered diagnostic screening lab work gets done.

They also help with examinations and treatments, sterilize instruments, assist with certain procedures, and administer medications as ordered. Also ordering of supplies such as drapes, table paper, staples, soaps, towels, medication samples, emergency crash-cart supplies are always on the administrative medical assistant's  to-do list.

Experienced medical assistants may also be asked to train, observe, and supervise new medical assistants, and other unlicensed medical office staff in their office.
