Medical assistant, dental assistant, and medical laboratory technician programs.
If you wish to attend school for job training financial aid, grants and student loans are available to those who qualify. Military members receive financial benefits under the GI bill and other programs. Their spouses and dependents can receive money for education and training through the Dependents Education Assistance (DEA) program. (Source: Military.com, the largest online destination to Americans with military affinity and those considering a military career.)
If you know the school you want to attend you may have the option of applying early and getting a response in the fall rather than by next spring. Be careful, because early applications are not always first-come, first-served and admitted. There are no "sure things" so take the time to fill out your applications sooner, rather than later last minute.

A vast number of medical assistants are trained on the job, although this is becoming less and less common. Many modern medical assistants receive their training through community and junior colleges, and vocational or military training institutions. Applicants to these vocational training institutions usually need a HS diploma/GED. Recommended high school courses include math, health, biology, typing, bookkeeping, computer, and office skills. Volunteer and healthcare related work experience, such as a nurse assistant, or home health aide usually is also very helpful. Upon graduation the student medical assistant receives a Medical Assisting diploma.
Certain states mandate that medical assistants to take a test or a course before they can perform certain tasks, such as taking x-rays, ultra sound treatments, or performing venipunctures. It is highly recommended that individuals seeking medical assistant training sign up for programs that are both legitimate and fully accredited so that they will receive the right diplomas and credentials. Therefore training is a job better left to the watchful eyes of instructors with experience in the field.
Medical assisting skills such as drawing up injections, administering ear lavage or instilling drops, collecting specimens, preparing slides, incubating Petri-dishes, changing wound dressings and wrapping bandages are best learned under the guidance of a clinical instructor. Prospective medical assistant students must realize that in this career mastery of clinical tasks with proper technique and controls are essential. Ideally it should take place in a traditional classroom where students can focus on interactive learning, feedback, and criticism. The direct supervision and hands-on practice in a safe supervised setting assures that the student will be competent and well prepared for the job.
Distance education programs emphasize learning theory over practical skills, which is fine as long as the individual has clearly defined learning goals. eLearners.com recommends: (Quote) "Knowing something about a school's accreditation can tell you a lot about the value of the degree or course for which you are paying. If you obtain a degree or take a course from a non-accredited institution you may find that the degree is not recognized by some employers or that the course credits may not transfer to other institutions. Understanding accreditation can also help you identify and avoid "diploma mills" (i.e. an unaccredited institution that grants degrees without ensuring students are properly qualified.)" (End Quote).
