red square bullet What is Federal Student Aid?
Availability of funds for college are at historic highs. The Department of Education guarantees more than $60 billion in low-cost student loans, a $4 billion increase over previous annual levels. Overall, $82 billion in grants, loans and other assistance will benefit more than 10 million students - 413,000 more than in 2005. FSA is undertaking many important initiatives to fine-tune its aid delivery services to its diverse customer base. FSA has seen the student loan portfolio grow steadily while the ratio of the default portfolio to the non-default portfolio has been decreased.

Federal Student Aid (FSA)
red square bullet Federal student aid is financial help for students enrolled in an eligible program at a school participating in federal student aid programs funded by the government. By “school,” we mean a two or four year university, community college, career school, or trade school that offers the program of your choice.
red square bullet Federal aid covers school expenses, including tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and transportation. Aid can also help pay for a computer and for dependent care.
red square bullet There are three categories of federal student aid: grants, work-study, and loans (see the chart on the following page for an overview of these programs). Check with your school to find out which programs your school participates in.
For more information go  to the U.S. Department of Education's student aid Web site, your "one-stop shop" to help you pay for college.

Applying for student loans, financial aid, grants, and tuition assistance means more than just filling out forms. You need to understand each school's requirements, gather information, meet deadlines, and pay any necessary fees for each submitted application.

How Do You Apply for Federal Student Aid?
red square bullet Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)—the online version (FAFSA on the Web) or the paper FAFSA.

Using FAFSA on the Web is faster and easier than using paper. Non-federal financial assistance programs and requirements often vary from school to school.

Always check with your school before applying for financial aid.

REMEMBER: Apply early! Call 1-800-433-3243.
red square bullet If you don't have Internet access, you can get a paper FAFSA from
— a high school guidance office
— a college financial aid office
— a local public library, or
— the Federal Student Aid Information Center

After you apply you'll receive a Student Aid Report. Your SAR contains the information reported on your FAFSA and usually includes your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number.
