Medical assistant, dental assistant, and medical laboratory technician programs.
Most medical assistants do not get into this profession for the money. Rather, they have the desire to help people, especially those that are vulnerable and need help. They enjoy the personal satisfaction and rewards that do not always come in form of pay. To them, their certification is the recognition of excellence and commitment to their professiont.
Whether you are...
Although certification or state licensure is not required it is highly recommended. It usually is the employer, not the state, who expects certification and will provide additional pay for it. This in turn, when advertising new positions, attracts medical assistants who have voluntarily taken the additional step toward professional development and commitment to excellence. Having certification, and hiring medical office staff that's certified creates a win-win situation for everybody! The right credentials certainly makes a difference when it comes to the office's over-all performance, work-flow, and image. The reasons for certification is to show credibility and the assurance that the staff is fully qualified.
When it comes to selection of candidates when hiring, most medical office managers and healthcare service providers will select the most qualified applicants, and discard applications of those who aren't. They prefer those who are well trained, experienced, and have passed a nationally recognized professional certification exam in their field.
Their reasoning for recruiting certified staff is for their own satisfaction, for the protection of their patients and other staff members, and their business's reputation. They also may see it as an indictor that the employee is more apt to keep abreast with the latest developments in healthcare, medicine, and technical discoveries.
Because certification benefits everybody:
It is important that candidates for a medical assistant position make it clear right from the start, either in their job application, or in the resume, but no later than during the interview that, they are multiskilled and are able to function interchangeably in the administrative and all clinical areas of the medical office.
It is common practice that experienced medical assistants are offered opportunities to crosstrain into higher, or related positions with more responsibilities. They also qualify for medical assistant instructor positions to teach at accredited vocational training institutions.
It is not unusual to be greeted by a medical assistant whose name tag reads "Trisha Wood, CMA, RMA, CMAS, and CMAA", for example! Her certifications indicate that she has taken and passed numerous medical assistant exams and is proficient in all clinical and administrative areas of the profession.
